The Positive Track Gazette
October 2009
Our success story for this edition is Danielle Townsley.  Danielle came to us in
January 2009.  Kim, her mother, was worried that Danielle was falling behind in
reading.  After testing we found that Danielle was indeed reading below grade
level.

We began our intervention program working twice a week for an hour.  I have to
say it was a real pleasure to work with her.  It was not easy at first, but after
awhile things really began to come together.  After a lot of hard work at The
Reading Station, Danielle is at grade level and has moved far beyond.  In the
area of word identification, Danielle started out below a 2nd grade level.  Now
she is reading words at a 5th grade level.  After being diligent with her speed
drills every night, her speed went from a 2nd grade level to a 4th grade level.
Not bad for a 3rd grader!

Congratulations Danielle, you have earned it.  We look forward to seeing her
again in January for FCAT prep.

In an effort to promote greater knowledge and understanding of dyslexia and related learning disabilities, the Board of Directors
of The International Dyslexia Association (IDA) has officially designated the month of October as National Dyslexia Awareness
Month.

According to The National Association of School Psychologists (NASP), 1 of every 3 special education students drops out of
school and, tragically, a high school drop-out has a greater likelihood of going to jail than a smoker has of getting cancer.

But it doesn't have to be that way. Early identification and appropriate intervention are critical. If identified early, a learning
disability can be treated through effective teaching methods and the majority of students with learning disabilities will have the
opportunity to reach their full potential.

"When a child does not learn to read, their lives are affected forever", says IDA's President, Nancy Hennessy. "Academically,
socially, economically, and emotionally, these individuals unnecessarily find themselves at risk. Teaching a child to read is a
fundamental responsibility of our educational system. IDA believes strongly that effective instruction depends on the qualitative
preparation of our teaching corps and on-going professional development. If we give our teachers the right tools, they will
succeed and our children will also succeed."  (dyslexia-ca.org)

Introducing our new Speech Language Pathologist: Karen Strand.  Here is a quick introduction about her, her family, and
why she loves doing what she does.

"I've been married for 5 years. My husband is Aaron, and our children are Peyton (4) and Porter (2).

I graduated from Florida State University in 1992 with my BS in Speech Language Pathology and again with my MS in
Speech Language Pathology in 1993. I decided to go into Speech Pathology because I couldn't decide if I wanted to work
with children or with the geriatric population. Speech Pathology allowed me to do both.

I love spending my day with children, and love watching them as they are able to master new skills.  I have worked at
Palmetto Elementary, Palm View Elementary, Kinnan Elementary, and Braden River Middle School.

I am certified through Florida Department of Health, as well as holding a teaching certificate in the area of Speech and
Language Impaired. I am a National Board Certified teacher, certified as an Exceptional Needs Specialist. I also have a
Medicaid provider number so that I am able to serve children who are on Medicaid."

Thanks Karen, We sure are happy to have her as part of the SOSA team!
